A concussion can be caused by a hit to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with forces transmitted to the brain. There are multiple signs and symptoms of a concussion, including physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related.

Signs and Symptoms

There are many red flags to watch for a potential concussion, including: 

  • Headache or dizziness
  • Blurred vision 
  • Balance problems 
  • Nausea or vomiting 
  • Sensitivity to light and noise 
  • Feeling slow or like “in a fog” 
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering 
  • Drowsiness 
  • Irritability or sadness
  • Trouble falling asleep

How Physiotherapy Can Help

A physiotherapist should be seen after 24-48 hours to provide education, guidelines, and exercises for recovery, including:

  • the visual system
  • neck or back muscles and joints
