Little League Elbow
Little League Elbow (LLE) is caused by repetitive forces at the elbow, overloading the joint during the early and late phases of throwing. The forces place tension on the medial structures of the elbow and compression of the lateral structures.
Signs and Symptoms
Presentation varies with age. However, typical signs and symptoms include:
- Swelling at the elbow
- Medial-sided elbow pain
- Decreased throwing speed or distance
- Tenderness on palpation
- Possible widening at the elbow joint which is seen on radiographs
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapists can advise rest from throwing, while prescribing a conservative approach towards rehabilitation. Early mobilization such as range of motion at the elbow and wrist joints, and progressive strengthening of the joints and surrounding muscles will be worked on during physiotherapy treatments. Throwing exercises can also be incorporated into the treatment once the therapist sees improvement in range of motion and strength, before advising a return to play protocol.
